Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using SyncTV ("the Service") you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. SyncTV is operated as a non-commercial university project and is provided free of charge.

2. No account required

SyncTV does not require registration or login. Anyone can create or join a watch room as a guest. A random, opaque session token is stored in an encrypted cookie in your browser solely to identify your session within a room (e.g. to remember that you are the room host). No name, email address, or any other personal information is collected.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation.
  • Submit, share, or request content that is illegal, harassing, defamatory, obscene, or that infringes third-party intellectual property rights.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the Service or its infrastructure.
  • Scrape, harvest, or otherwise extract data from the Service using automated scripts, bots, crawlers, spiders, or any other automated means. This prohibition applies regardless of the technical method used and regardless of whether the data collected is publicly visible.
  • Use the Service to collect data for training machine learning models, large language models, or any other artificial intelligence system.
  • Circumvent, disable, or otherwise interfere with security-related features of the Service.

SyncTV is a YouTube video synchronisation platform. All video content is sourced via the YouTube IFrame API and is subject to YouTube's own Terms of Service. You are responsible for ensuring that any video you request or approve complies with applicable law and YouTube's policies.

4. Intellectual property

SyncTV does not host, store, or transcode any video content. All video is streamed directly from YouTube under their licensing terms. The SyncTV platform code, design, and branding remain the property of the developer.

5. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, availability, or error-free operation. As a non-commercial university project, no service-level agreement is offered.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by Finnish law, the developer of SyncTV shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service.

7. Termination of access

We reserve the right to block access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, the Service, or third parties.

8. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the new Terms. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.

9. Governing law & jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Finland. Any disputes arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of Finland.
